High School Roundup: Corona del Mar wrestling wins CIF Division 6 dual meet title

The Corona del Mar High wrestling team defeated Montebello 48-23 to win the CIF Southern Section Division 6 dual meet wrestling championships on Saturday at Perris Orange Vista High.

Eric Rector (113), Luke Villaluz (126), Deegan Montalbano (152), Danny Reichner (182), Dylan Wood (195), Emilio Franco (220) and Chase Zanck (285) all won their matches by pin.

Wayne Muse (138) and Bix Cegielski (145) also earned victories by decision.

“The kids were laser-focused tonight,” Sea Kings coach Mark Alex said. “They had one goal in mind. It was to win the championship. They didn’t want to go there and just win a couple of matches. They wanted to win the championship.”

The Sea Kings won their first CIF dual meet championship since 1972.

On the day, CdM also beat San Bernardino San Gorgonio (60-16), Orange Vista (39-30) and Baldwin Park Sierra Vista (57-21).

Huntington Beach, the Wave League champion, lost to Montebello in the second round by a score of 48-30.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Santa Margarita 7, Newport Harbor 6: Taylor Smith scored four goals for the Sailors in the fifth-place match of the Irvine Southern California Championships tournament Saturday at Woollett Aquatics Center.

Emily Cantu and Avery Montiel also scored goals for the Sailors (19-7), who finished in sixth place. Montiel had two steals, and goalkeeper Anna Reed made six saves.

Smith was named to the all-tournament team.

Newport Harbor also beat Orange Lutheran 9-6 earlier Saturday in a fifth-place semifinal.

The Sailors host rival Corona del Mar in their Surf League finale Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Westlake Village Oaks Christian 7, Corona del Mar 5: The Sea Kings finished in 10th place in the Irvine Southern California Championships after dropping the ninth-place match Saturday at Woollett Aquatics Center.

With the loss, CdM (12-15) was eliminated from CIF playoff contention. With one match remaining, the Sea Kings will be unable to obtain the .500 overall record needed to apply for an at-large berth.

Senior goalkeeper Maya Avital earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Goalkeeper honors. She made eight saves against Oaks Christian. Grace Myers led the Sea Kings with three goals.

Kaity Greenwald scored the game-winner in the second sudden-death overtime period as CdM beat San Diego Cathedral Catholic 5-4 in a ninth-place semifinal earlier Saturday. Kira Hoffman led the Sea Kings with two goals.
